Note: This great little box was planted in 2004 by someone named Matthew. It had been archived and placed up for adoption on LBNA, so after a check on it this morning, I've adopted it to get it out of the basement. :) It's ship-shape and ready for visitors!

From exit 16 or 17 in Meriden, head east on East Main St. You will go through a busy retail area. Just past the Meriden and Middlefield town line and before the intersection with Route 66, there will be a small road off the right. Take that road down to Black Pond below. Black Pond is easy to spot; it is at the base of the large cliff. Park you car at the state boat launch area.

Black Snake Letterbox

From the boat launch area, if you are facing the water, the trail is behind you up the ridge. Either scramble up one of the trails, or walk back up the road to where the trail meets the road. The trail is an old dirt road that is frequently used by RV and dirt bikes.

Walking along the trail you are on the side of the ridge and gaining elevation over Black Pond to your right. Walk along the path until you come to a point where it will split in two different ways. Follow the right path that goes along closer to the edge of the hill side. This is the Blue Blazed Mattabesett trail.

You should make it to the top where you will have your first clear view over the cliff edge in about 20-25 minuets. You should be able to look out across the pond and see where you parked at the boat launch area.

Walk along the path until you come to a clearing about 30 ft. across from cliff edge. Off toward the middle there will be two clusters of small trees and one small evergreen tree. On one of the small trees in the cluster to the right there will be a blue blaze. There should be about 4 small trees in the cluster to the right and about 5 on the one to the left. (the cluster with a blue blazed tree) Stand in between the two clusters facing the small ever green tree. Now walk to the ever green tree and stand to the left side of it. Walk about 15 paces forward and you will come to a fallen tree. Keep walking and about 25 paces and you will come to another fallen tree to your right. Go to the base of the fallen tree and look under it. Behind a rock or two you will find the BLACK SNAKE letterbox. Good for you!
