A quiet place with a lot of history.

In Rome City, Indiana there is a series of springs that could tell a good story. Our Lady Mother of Mercy Center at Historic Kneipp Springs is located just off of Highway 9 on Northport Road, north of Rome City. The area was revered by Native Americans and later the cold water springs became a place of healing. The Kneipp Sanitarium was operating in the 1890s advertised as a natural healing and water cure institute. The sanitarium was purchased in December of 1901 by the Precious Blood Sisters with the permission of Archbishop Elder. It was owned and operated by this order until 1977 when a change in the health care prompted the sisters to sell the property. Since then it has had many owners. The Mother of Mercy Center is working to restore the buildings and grounds.

DIRECTIONS: If you are heading south down Highway 9, when you pass through Wolcottville you are about 1 mile from Northport Road. When you see the Sylvan Cellars sign turn right on to Northport Road. Google Maps still has it as Kelly Street.

If you are heading north up Highway 9 you will go through Rome City. As you head out of town on the left you will see the dam and on the other side of the small lake is the beginning of the property. If the lower gate is open (before the bridge) you can turn off Highway 9 on to the property. Just after you pass under the bridge, on the left is the turn for Northport Road. You will see the sign for Sylvan Cellars.

At the ALL WAY STOP you will go straight, through the gate, 2730 Northport Road. Go down the drive and turn right and park in front of the large building.

You follow the paved path down the hill. Follow the path over 2 bridges heading for the hill. In the 1910s or 1920s this hill was requested to be formed by the Precious Blood Sisters who owned the Kneipp Springs Sanitarium. The dirt came from the channels dug on the property. Box #1 is on the hill. Climb the steps and follow the path to the fire ring. There are 2 concrete benches. The bench with the message stones has a secret place containing the box.

Box #2 is off to the left instead of heading up the hill. Follow the paved path to the little well. Inside the well is the box.

Please feel free to wander the grounds on the mowed paths. If you come on the third Saturday of the month between May and October the Mother of Mercy chapel is open for tours at 12 pm. The chapel just recently celebrated its 100th anniversary, October 2016.
