This letterbox is located at South Park Community Church
History:
In the summer of 1872, A man named Sheldon Jackson came to Fairplay with a small congregation to organize the second highest altitude Presbyterian church. He was shocked that the locals didn't set aside a day of rest on Sundays.
He was "the bearer of good tidings" to the miners on the mountains of Colorado.
In spring 1874, the tiny congregation in Fairplay applied to the Board of Home Missions for $1,200 to
build a church (the congregation gave an additional $200). The request was granted and the church building was ordered from a mail order catalog and it was delivered by train from Chicago. Dr. Jackson established 22 churches in Colorado and more than 100 in the American West.
Of those, this is one of the few original church buildings still standing.
Find it:
Go through the wooden archway on the North side of the church.
Down 3 steps and turn left.
What you seek is between the right bench and the table, near the fence.
Please provide your own ink and pen, and tuck back discreetly.
Hike length: 0.1 miles
