This letter box can be found just off Interstate 5 in the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, and involves very little walking.
The diverse habitats of Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge are home to over 200 species of birds and numerous other fish and wildlife species. Before the 1790s, Elk, pronghorn, and even grizzly bear inhabited this area, and the Plains Miwok indians relied on the land and its abundant wildlife for survival. The refuge was established in 1992 and is a great place to experience the wildlife observation guided walks and paddle tours. As you visit, see if you can find our favorite - the burrowing owl.
To find this letterbox, exit off Interstate 5 at Elk Grove Boulevard and find the place where the road ends and the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge begins to the west. Stand at the sign facing due west. Enjoy the beautiful view of the wetlands and grazing cattle. Turn south and walk south until you reach the end of the pavement. Look back toward I-5 and you will see two twin trees. Walk down to where the two trees meet. Stand between the 2 trees facing east. Walk along the fence line approximately 65 steps, pass four trees. When you get to the 5th tree, look for a gray slate rock that has no business being in a wetland in Elk Grove. The box is buried underneath the rock.
