To begin your journey through the Palmer Arboretum walk down the path to the right of the parking lot. You will find find a mailbox located to the left. Inside you will find a list of all the main trees in the park with a # (number) that corresponds to them. This list will help you to identify the trees along your way. Keep this sheet handy, but please return it to the mailbox for the next visitor.

#1 Box/stamp: Find the European Birch (Betula pendular) tree, from here walk to the stump table, to the right you will find an American Holly (Ilex opaca), and under it you will locate Box #1 with stamp.

#2 Box/stamp: Walk down between the two Tulip Trees (Linodendron chinense), take notice of the giant Japanese Yew (Taxus cuspidata) overhead, walk in front of the giant Yew, go left and to the back to find the Dwarf Yew (Taxus cuspidata), there you will locate Box #2 with stamp.

#3 Box/stamp: Find the Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) [#25 on list], walk down the path to find a Viburnum Bush (Dentate x species), directly across the bush is a gigantic Purple Beech (Fagus sylvatica) [#24 on list], NOTICE the size! Walk around and you will locate Box #3 with stamp.

#4 Box/stamp: Find the Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) [#7 on list], walk to the right to find the Stewartia (Stewartia pseudocamellia) [#8 on list]. Continuing walking to find a bench, to the left of the bench near stone wall, and under the Winged Euonymus (Euonymus alatus) [On Connecticut's Invasive Plant List], you will locate Box #4 and stamp.

#5 Box/stamp: Locate the Great White Oak tree (Quercus alba) [#11 on list], walk to the right and find a Japanese Maple (Acer palmate). While here notice the Maple next to it and the different leaves, this is known as a “Full Moon Maple” (Acer shirasawanum). Look back at the Japanese Maple and to the left is a Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) surrounded with wood chips, here you will locate Box #5 and stamp.

#6 Box/stamp: Be careful for the next location - find the "Devils Walking Stick" (Aralia spinoso), notice the thorns on the bark (don’t worry the box is not located here!) Look around and you will see a table and chairs carved out of large log. Box #6 is under one of the log chairs.

#7 Box/stamp: Find the American Lindon tree (Tilia americana) [#17 on list] walk to the "Giant Mushroom" carving and turn left to look for a fallen tree that has been carved out to create flat bench. Box #7 with stamp is located in this area.

#8 Box/stamp: Find the American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) [#16 on list] take a break at the "tree table" with four chairs. To the left of the Beech Tree you will see an odd looking tree trunk, this is called a Poplar tree (Salicacea populous), they have super flexible bark. Walk around to find the hole in the tree, there you will locate Box #8 with stamp. This is the last box on our tour around the Arboretum.

Thank you for taking the time to stop and visit the Palmer Arboretum, and for going on our adventure. We hope that you not only got some great stamps, but also learned a little bit about trees and plants. Please tell your friends about this hidden gem in the Northeast Corner of Connecticut, part of the "Last Green Valley".
