The Cherney Maribel caves county park is a 75 acre park located along the twin river in Maribel. It boasts caves, a natural mineral spring, hiking tand mountain bike trails and the historic ruins of a hotel that once stood nearby. The park hosts cave tours of its largest cave once per month during the summer. Check their website for more details. The tours are held by volunteer cave specialists and is run on donations.
Park your car in the farthest parking area nearest to the children's playground And pavilion. Go to gravel trail off farthest end of lot. Pavilion with rest rooms will be to your left. Follow the trail. The ruins of the Maribel hotel will be up ahead. They are on private property so you will need to take photos from this trail or back out on the roadway. Take the trail down hill. The New Hope Cave will be to your right. Pass this cave and take stone steps to your left. Follow mineral spring sign. You will walk over small mountain bike bridge. Have a seat on bottom step. Reach under left side of stair for first box. Right side when you are sitting on it. You have found Maribel caves. Box # 1. Be super careful as this is a popular spot.
After stamping up head to top of stairs and check out the springs, head back the way you came to the first cave - New Hope Cave. If you are lucky enough to come on an open cave tour day, you can check out its inside. Walk past the new hope cave onto the cave trail. The cave will come to a crossroads. Stay right along the rock wall. At the Pancake cave head up the rocky trail. At the stump to your left look inside the front Rooty crevice. Hidden under bark. " Family Names" Box #2. The initial for the two families that hiked here to explore and hide these boxes.
Keep walking the cave trail. Walk over wooden bridge. Walk over the second bridge by Coopers cave and continue walking. Where the trail makes its first sharp turn there will be a leaning tree over the trail next to A broken tree and a log. Go under the leaning tree and reach under the first root. Box #3. " photo ops". This place has so many great photo oppurtunities. Hope you have room on your camera
Take the trail right and take another right. You will see the stairs ahead. Walk up these stairs. Take the trail between the stair groups. It heads towards your left. Take trail that heads down along the cave walls. You will see a small locked gate into the cave. Take a seat on the right side of this cave enterance. It is 5 steps in from the trail. Look directly behind you behind a stone is your last box. box #4."I call this place home". One of the many animals that live here. Stamp up and head back up
Series of stairs to parking lot or head down to 2 miles of trail systems.
