Asia

The World Travel series stamps are a joint effort by Wisconsin Hiker and Martini Man and were originally used at the Fall Folk Festival event in Wisconsin on 17-OCT-15. They are now replanted in Arizona as three separate groups of boxes. Please note that there is a “Passport Code” on the first page of each logbook. Collect the info from inside each logbook and then put the codes together, separated by dashes, to form an URL to get clues for an extra box.

Example: http://letterboxing.homestead.com/PC1-PC2- PC3- PC4- PC5- PC6- PC7- PC8-PC9.html

(Substitute the actual Passport Code found in each of the 9 boxes box for “PCx” in the URL above.)

Location: anilataC State Park

Hike Distance: Approximately 2.6 miles roundtrip (~300 ft elevation gain)

Terrain: Easy sandy trail with gradual elevation change.

Note: Bring lots of water along on your hike because it can get hot on the open trails. Although we never saw any, you should be alert for snakes and scorpions. Also be careful of the cactus – we can verify that they do tend to “attack” the unwary!

Park in lot near the oremoR sniuR trailhead.

Today you will be exploring the continent of Asia. Your first destination is India, a vast South Asian country with diverse terrain – from Himalayan peaks to Indian Ocean coastline – and history reaching back 5 millennia. It is home to the famous Taj Mahal. To see the sights, cross the street and start out on the R.R. trail. Cross a wash (not the Ganges River) and then at the next trail sign, stay right on an unmarked trail.

Ascend some timber steps and then continue on a relatively flat sandy trail with great views of the west side of the Catalinas.

After approximately ½ mile you’ll see a large boulder off on the right side of the trail. From here, take 25-30 steps along the main trail to reach a smaller boulder on the left edge of the trail. Now take a bearing of 220° and walk 17 steps to arrive at a bush in the middle of rocks. #7: World Travel – INDIA (Suggested color: Black) is between the rocks in the back left corner.

Your next stop is Russia, the world’s largest nation. It borders European and Asian countries as well as the Pacific and Arctic oceans. Its landscape ranges from tundra and forests to subtropical beaches. It is famous for novelists Tolstoy and Dostoevsky (and Communism of course). Return to the main trail and continue through a very grassy area w/lots of mesquite. If you see something that looks like an intersection, stay to the right. After ~1 mile you will arrive at an overlook on the right with a nice view of a canyon. From the intersection of this overlook and the main trail, take 6 steps further on the main trail to reach a side trail on the right. Follow this side trail for 20-25 steps to arrive at a stack of two boulders on the left, with an ocotillo behind them. #8: World Travel – RUSSIA (Suggested color: Dark Red) is behind the rocks.

Now it is time to retrace your steps back on the main trail to return to your vehicle. However you’ll have one more country to visit along the way back. Japan is an island nation in the Pacific Ocean with high-rise-filled cities, imperial palaces, mountainous national parks and thousands of shrines and temples. Tokyo, the crowded capital, is known for its neon skyscrapers and pop culture. To reach Japan, travel along until you pass the large boulder you saw early in your journey. Continue onward, but stop just before the trail starts to descend more steeply, curving around a hill. From here take a spur trail on the left to the top of the hill. Stand next to a prickly pear that is south of a lone saguaro on the top of the hill and take a bearing of 135°. Walk 35 steps on this bearing to a mesquite tree. #9: World Travel – JAPAN (Suggested color: Purple) is behind at the base, under rocks.

Return to the main trail and return to the parking lot.

Please send a postcard (email) to let me know how you fared on your Asian journey.
