Parking can be found in a small lot (2-3 cars) between a red brick wall and a school speed limit sign beside 16 Lowell St.

John Hancock was a merchant, statesman, and prominent patriot of the American Revolution. He was born in Quincy, Ma in January 1737. He died on October 8 1783 and is buried in Boston. He went to Harvard College and graduated in 1754. Hancock served as the president of the Second Continental Congress and was the first and third governor of the commonwealth of Massachusetts. He is remembered for his large and stylist signature on the Declaration of Independence, so much so that the term 'John Hancock' became a synonym for a person's signature in the US.
On June 22,1793, while governor, the Middlesex Canal was charted with a signature by Hancock. Hancock was also among the investors who purchased shares in the corportion. Other investors included John Adams, John Quincy Adams and Christopher Gore.
The Middlesex Canal is 27 miles long and was completed in 1803. Towns along the canal included Woburn, Chelmsford, Wilmington. Billerica, Winchester, Medford, Somerville and Charlestown. It was 3-1/2 feet deep x 30 feet wide with 20 locks, 8 aqueducts, and 50 bridges. The engineer for the project was Loammi Baldwin.
The canal corporation ended in 1860. Much of the canal is still visible, and efforts continue to preserve the canal and its history is done by the volunteers of the Middlesex Canal Association. In Woburn, parts of the canal can still be seen at the Stop and Shop rotary as well as off of School Street in North Woburn. For more information on the canal, Middlesex Canal Museum and Visitor Center in Billerica please go to http://www.middlesexcanal.org. (Yes there is a letterbox in the museum)
After parking the car walk the path beside the remains of the canal. Some house will be on your right across the water. On your left you will see Tocci Building Corp and brick and stone building then the Woburn Boys club, field and playground. The path, lined with bushes, gets thinner. Continue on path passing a movable bench and a teen hangout area. Imagine a horses on this higher area pulling a canal boat. On your right you will see a light blue house with a chain link fence with red and white slats. As the waterway narrows and turns right, you'll see a wooden bridge coming form a back yard. On the left is the back of a building and up a slight slope is a tree with a hollow spot at the bottom. Walk up the slope, behind the tree with the hollow is John's signature under rocks and leaves.
Please remember that people in the houses or in their yards maybe able to see you. Stamp in black ink and rehide. Retrace your steps to return to your car.
