About the Wantagh Museum:
The Wantagh Museum resides in three structures, The Station, The "Jamaica" Railroad Car and the Original Wantagh Post Office. The Station was built in 1885 and originally stood on Railroad Avenue, east of Wantagh Avenue. In 1966, The Station was moved to its current location to save it from demolition when the Wantagh Railroad service was expanded. After this move, The Station was restored to its 1904 appearance, and in 1982, the Wantagh Preservation Society opened the structure to the public as a museum.
Built in 1912 for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), The "Jamaica" was a magnificent parlor car complete with solarium, cooking facilities and an ice-cooled air conditioning system. It was donated by the LIRR to the Wantagh Preservation Society in 1972.
Across from The Station stands Wantagh's Original Post Office, which is currently being restored. This 10 x 12 foot structure was built in 1907 and once stood on the corner of Wantagh and Railroad Avenues. (This location is now occupied by Mulcahy's.)

BOX #1…."ALL ABOARD THE JAMAICA" To find this letterbox…..Park in the lot and walk past the Jamaica car… to the right you will see a group of 7 trees … just past those will be a white post labeled (WTM)... This will be near the entrance to the path that you must follow…this path will lead you through a wooded area to another wooden post...keep following the trail until you come to an arched tree over the trail. To the right you will see a large log on the ground and if you search behind the log you will see a pile of bark which will be covering box #1
BOX #2…. 1907 Post Office ~ head back to the path and continue West …make a right at the T and continue on the path that is parallel to the parkway (Wantagh Pkwy)….now you are heading North…cross over a small bridge…and now start counting your steps until you reach around 85 steps… head west and go to the tree with the huge roots …behind this tree you will notice a large gnarl shaped like a seat. Below this gnarl in between two roots you will find treasure#2.
BOX #3…Victorian Railroad Station ~ From here you will head back (south) until you cross over the bridge and look for the arched tree…make a left and take the path back toward the parking lot…Once out of the wooded area you will make a right heading South and walk passed the Jamaica railroad car… once you pass the cement wall you will find a tree to the left with a large opening…inside that hollow is where you will find the 3rd box. As always, please reseal bag and secure the box and replace and cover with leaves & twigs.

If you take this hike on a Sunday, feel free to visit the museum and learn about the history of the Wantagh Railroad Station, the Jamaica railroad car and the original Wantagh Post Office. The hours are Sunday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, from mid April through mid November.
~Hope you've enjoyed the trio!
