The hunt for this letterbox will take you through the Old Rifle Range, a tract of conservation land in Concord, Massachusetts that was once used for target practice by the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, beginning in 1910. It was later used by the U.S. Army during World War I. Today, the remains of the four targets and their concrete walls can still be seen at the trailside. You'll pass by three of them during your search, but afterward, continuing to the fourth and past it to Kennedy's pond, makes for a lovely long walk.

Begin at the small parking area near the intersection of Williams Rd and Old Marlboro Rd. Follow the main trail past the first three targets, about 1/3 mile. A few hundred feet past the third target you will come to a small clearing, where a red-blazed trail leaves to the right. Turn right onto this red trail and shortly a blue trail will split to the right. Follow this blue trail until you come to a small footbridge. Standing on the footbridge and looking straight ahead, you will see, just off the trail, an oak tree whose trunk splits just above the ground. Behind this oak, in a hollow in the roots, you'll find the Rifle Range Woodland Letterbox.

You can return to the parking area the way you came, or continue on the blue trail until it ends at an intersection with the red trail. Turn left on the red trail to return to the clearing, and left at the clearing to return to the parking lot.

Hike length: 1 mile
