ThIs box wAs creaTed for a themed letterbox gathering earlier this summer in Lake BLuff IL, with the intentiOn of taking it back to our nEck of the Woods to pLant the box back in the wild. While the cArving was created with the theme in mind, it also brought bacK somE “vintagE” meMories of the 70’s! OncE you find your staRting location, a word of cAution- the land the box is pLanted on, while public, can be useD during hunting season- so pLease keep that in mind before yOu start ouT, and Please do not dress in the cAmo coloRs of many letterboxes! With that being said, enjoy the hiKe and happy huntING!

From the parking area head E/SE to the segment name sign and follow the “blue” through the meadow. Pass a 4-way and continue to the T, there you will turn Left - and now is the time you want to start your count- NOT Blue, but "Yellow", counting as you go! Shortly along you will see a side trip to the right (this yellow does not count!), go sit with Juan and enjoy the view, then come on back to the trail! You will pass a large SPOR on your right and then begin to start skirting the woods, then quickly in and out, and past a small patch of Birch. Continuing on, you start to incline, passing a bench on the left - now you can sit with the “Club” to see where you’ve been! Onward, just past a 4-way, you should see #7 (are you still counting?) – now the fun begins! UP, UP, Up you go through the woods, keep on counting as you go - remember slow and steady wins the race! When you reach the top, the trail now levels off and through the pines you go. At #17 - a rock wall you should see, looks like a good spot to take a break. So get out your compass and from the counted post- take a bearing of approx. 7 degrees, now take approx. 7 steps forward toward the rock wall and the twin on the left. A large “pinkish” rock, a “vintage” fence post- from there approx. 27 inches to the left (west) under a “rocks and pinecones” cover- you will find what you are looking for on the wall*.

*As a side note, you may feel you want to approach finding this box from the right, going over the wall and behind the twins, which would create less of a social trail, but BEWARE if you do- the “remains” of a barbed wire fence lurk back there, and along the wall- just use caution if you do!

Now that you have what you came to find, you could turn around and hike back to your vehicle, OR you could continue on the trail to see a beautiful “vintage UP atop” site - a short way ahead at #19 is a sign about the site, and you many even spy it through the trees, but for a even better look go just past #21, over a small bridge and to the “paved” path- cross it carefully and you will have an even better view!

Hope you enjoy the hike, now go grab a cold one!
Box updates always appreciated- Thanks!
