Ode to "Hairy" Palmer
The minister warned him again and again
What he’d been doing was some kind a sin
“You are a lunatic and a heretic
Showing it out here to the public”
The townsfolk agreed - thus causing a backlash
His trip to town turned obscene in a flash
Four burly brutes, to make this all stop
Wrestled him down to give it a crop
“I have the right to choose what I will do with mine
Leave me to be and just worry about thine”
Well he struggled and he stabbed, clawed, kicked and kneed ‘em
A farmer by trade, his strength won his freedom
But liberty was fleeting-so in jail he’d remain
Fifteen months - no longer master of his domain
Pay the ten-dollar fine to get out of the brig?
His reply to the judge, “I don’t give a fig”
“Since the dawn of man this has been the mode
How could this be breaking the penal code?”
On principled belief, he refused to budge
His mother swayed him as asked by the judge
Free from the shackles, his legend still grew
Their sneers and jeers he tried to eschew
But times would change & rage peter-out
Now every Tom, Dick, & Harry did brazenly flout
Let bygones be bygones he heard them all say
He’d retort “be fruitful and multiply” (though in a less delicate way)
When his days were done and he turned up his toes
He’d have the last word as he laid in repose
Etched right in the stone is an epitaph
Your quest starts at his immortal last laugh
East southeast for one hundred eight footfall
To find yourself staring at Dickinson’s Ball
Now west a few steps across grass and gravel
To the monolithic Johnson is your next travel
Spy Durant and to there you must tack
He’s the right one if you find Swett on his back
Close by is a stone with not a body below
Eight steps southwest and the rear will bestow
Now left along the edge you must pass
To see Mary Petts laying out on the grass
Onward you’ll go to solve this paradox
Look closely to your right for Minnie Wilcox
It bends down to the right you will see
If you’ve handled these words adroitly
You’re in the purlieu of what you have sought
When you stand next to Ripley (believe it or not)
The venerable flagpole is your new special purpose
You’re almost there now - no need to be nervous
Three cannons now await - all primed for action
Though the one in the middle is the main attraction
Walk right on over to the business end
Then a few step down you’ll need to descend
With no one nearby and nobody looking
Off to the right you’ll soon to be hooking
Congratulations to you! You’ve found the right place
It’s that tree with the large hole at its base
As we finish the tale - let’s add our little wink in
We’re talking about a beard, what were you thinking?
So before forming a posse and knotting the rope
First go wash your mind out with soap!
