Ovando was named after Ovando Hoyt, a rancher and the town’s first postmaster. Early in the town’s history it was a distribution center for about 75 miles. In 1919 most of the town was destroyed by a fire and never rebuilt.

The area is an access point to the Bob Marshall Wilderness area and for fly fishing in the Blackfoot River.

To find the letterbox, you’ll need to visit the Hoosgow. You can stay the night if you want, it’s a first come, first stay honor system (the teepee and shephard’s wagon are also available).

Once your visit is completed, walk outside and notice the privy between the hoosgow and the museum. Go behind the privy.
With your back to the privy, you’ll see a pine tree directly in front of you. Walk to the tree and behind it under a “purple” flat rock you’ll find your miniature hoosgow.
