Difficulty: Easy
Distance to Letterbox: 100 yards
The history behind the letterbox is below. Could not find the historical marker, but it is in the county for which the box is noted (he is buried in High Hill Cemetery, but not sure where this was). Box is located in Pin Oak Cemetery, Great!!!!
Here is the history from the historical marker:
Organized in Fayette County, 1861, by Edmund Creuzbaur, a former Prussian artillery officer, and composed of around 150 men, 4 cannon, 72 horses, 39 mules. It served as both light and heavy field artillery at Fort Brown, Sabine Pass and other points in Texas and Louisiana. The unit at Calcasieu Pass, La., May 1864, attacked and captured two Union gunboats. In the 75-minute fight, one ship was hit 65 times; Wm. Kneip was killed; of the wounded, three later died. Capt. Creuzbaur soon after resigned and his brother-in-law, Capt. Charles Welhausen, assumed the command.
Directions:
From I-10 in Flatonia, go north on FM 609 to Pin Oak Rd on the right (look for Pin Oak Cemetery sign). Turn right and follow road to the end (will curve left and get more grassy) in front of cemetery. Park near gate and Historical Marker.
To the Letterbox:
Enter the gate and go left along the fence, turn right at the corner and continue past metal grave lots on left to the wing fence with metal pole between the wooden posts. Outside the fence is a cement cemetery marker. Box is at back side of the fence post, near the ground, wedged in wire by the marker.
