This is one of many letterboxes which are being planted by Connecticut letterboxers to enhance the CT DEEP's 2015 Sky's The Limit Challenge. There is more information, including trail maps, at the CT DEEP webpage.

At Mohawk Mountain you can meet the challenge without hiking by simply driving to the location. But since we are encouraging hiking, this will take you on an about 2.25 mile hike (round trip).

Park your car at Cunningham Tower and walk in to the tower. Just before you reach the tower you will see a trail blaze on the ground. Go left. As you walk, watch for an old spring with a well pump and another capped spring. You will climb some stone stairs built by the CCC when this was part of the Appalachian Trail. Follow this trail just over one mile to the top where you can enjoy the views and take pictures. The top of the mountain has been home to several different towers including a Victorian style tower and standard fire watch tower.

Head back down the trails you walked up. You are on a gravel road at first and then go into the woods on the trail. After you go down the first ledge turn right and follow the ledge. This ledge is right below the gravel road. You will pass a lovely jumble of rocks and crevices, then a taller smooth section. Several feet beyond that the rocks peter out. The next to the last rock is sort of alligator skinned. Between that and the last you will find the letterbox. In a little crevice behind an imported rock. There is also some wintergreen right there.

Return to the trail and continue back to your car.
