Dr. Richard Brewer is an award winning biological scientist and author with interests in ecology, conservation and ornithology. He also has an interesting blog at richardbrewer.org
Dr. Brewer deeded this 40 acres to Michigan Nature Association, which was established to protect plants and animals in their natural habitat. The Sanctuary is open to the public for non-destructive activities...foot traffic only and no pets.

Located at 8297 East R Ave. on the North side of the road.
There is just room enough to park off the road. You'll have to go around a gate. Follow the lane straight ahead. After a bit you'll come to the MNA sign. Check out the woodpecker tree and log beside it! Keep your eyes peeled and you may spot a Pileated Woodpecker, or hear his Woody Woodpecker call. The lane curves and soon you will be in a clearing where there is a house and garage. The trail takes up again to the right side of the garage. It is marked with blue diamonds. Step over a pair of downed logs. Soon you will come to a huge downed tree with a diamond on each end. Find the chickadee a little more than half way towards the canopy.

This is an easy walk, about 30 minutes total. HOWEVER! Be prepared! As this is a sanctuary for plants and animals, they don't mow or trim trails. Early Spring was beautiful with lots of blooming ephemeral wildflowers. Mid-July there was some stinging nettles and LOTS of mosquitoes. As long as you are prepared, you will enjoy a lovely walk in a natural area.
