Destination: Tomahawk Pond
Hike is short and easy, involves one short hill.

Tomahawk Pond is a fishing area especially for angling largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. Trout are available seasonally.
There is an area for picnics and grilling; Camping is NOT available at this site.

Accessible from the South: From Route 259 turn North onto Runions Creek Road (right if you were heading West on 259, left if you were heading East on 259), Follow Runions Creek Road to Tomakawk Pond Picnic Area on the right side (Runions Creek Road eventually becomes Orkney Springs Road-610)
or Accessible from the North: Take route 263 West through Basye, Turn left onto Orkney Springs Road (Rt. 610), Follow 610 for about 1 1/2 miles staying to the right when it forks, Stay on 610 for about 1 1/2 more miles to the Tomahawk Picnic area.

Adventure question: How big is Tomahawk Pond and when was is built?

Once parked, descend the steps to get to the Pond. Walking counterclockwise around the pond, find the road clearing between the fourth and fifth blocked and benched fishing semi-circle. Walk up the road for about 150-200 feet, passing several mounds of dirt (anthills???..) about a couple feet in height on the left side. Look for a tree (not a coniferous tree) on the right side with an dark colored, odd looking growth about half ways up the trunk. Leave the trail behind this tree for about 7-8 paces/15-16 steps to a spot where several trees intersect-One being a downed and barkless tree resting in the nook of several other trees. The letterbox is nestled in this nook and covered with other branches, bark (it's protective roof), and leaves.

Please contact the placer with the status of the box. We hope you enjoy the pond and this letterbox adventure in the quiet county of Shenandoah!
