**** Box will be coming out of retirement for the "Presidents Day and Patriotism event on 2/23/2019 in Janesville WI- WOM clue at the event.

Box retired 5/30/18

This Letterbox is for our daughter “Prancing Piano”, since her birthday falls so close to the 4th of July, we generally celebrate it then- and what is the 4th without Fireworks! But we don’t watch the Fireworks in our hometown; we head over to the village of Greendale- where thanks to our wonderful Aunt- we get the best seats in the house!

To find this Letterbox and our Fireworks spot, you will need to head down Greendale’s’ 4th of July parade route and find out a little about this historic village- and even though school is out- do a little math!

Start your search at the intersection of Northway and Broad St., this is the north end of the Heart of Greendale. Park your car in the public parking as close as you can toward the Village Hall and make your way over toward the front of the building (please use the crosswalks).

There is a plaque on the left side of the brick wall in front of the building, what is the year the village was founded?_____________(A)

Now cross back across Northway to the west side of Broad Street and follow the sidewalk that lines the shops on this side. You will pass by a statue of a small girl as you continue on to a fountain. Behind the fountain is a plaque on the right side of the building, the site of the first Post Office.

This building also was a medical building, what was the cost of an appointment?_______________ (B)

Now walk around the fountain and find the plaque that when you are reading it, you are facing 330 degrees.

What is the total number of letters, in the first four words, of the first sentence after the title of the plaque? (C)_______________
(Hint: it is the official title of a famous visitor)

Continue on your way until you get to a public timepiece.
How many faces does the timepiece have?____________(D)

You will pass the Library as you make your way to the end of this row of businesses- you should be at the corner now of Schoolway & Broad St.- cross Schoolway and then head West toward the Greendale Middle school. The next intersection will be Parking St. You will see a RED sidewalk to your left that leads to a flagpole and a statue by a Wisconsin sculptor.

How many people are carved into the statue?___________(E)

Return back to the intersection of Schoolway and Broad St. and continue south, passing Gazebo Square and the Post office. Your next intersection is Crocus Ct., you are in the “C” section of Greendale. If you look around, you will start to see the historic homes know as “Originals”. Continue your stroll to the next street, which is Conifer Lane. Once you cross Conifer you want to start counting the streetlights on your left.

How many streetlights are there between Conifer and the next street? __________(F)

You should now be at the Intersection of Catalpa St. and Broad St. Cross Catalpa and on your right should be Jaycee Park, a favorite spot for the kids, and if you like to read, check and see if there is something interesting in the *“Book House” to your right (* NOTE-Sadly the Little Free Library that was once there is now removed! 9/9/16). Back at the corner and across the street is a “Green Space” - something else Greendale is know for- AND our spot to watch the fireworks!

Cross Broad St. and make your way to the LARGE 2-3 trunked Oak tree just before the tree line starts. Align yourself with the tree head south toward the large building in front of you, which is Greendale High School. Stop at the edge of the tree line and turn to face East.

Now is when you need the information you gathered on the parade route.

Take the cost of an appointment (B)- you won’t need the decimal point) and subtract the number of letters of the fountain plaque (C)
Then take that number of steps forward following the treeline. __________

You should now see what could be a few choices, turn to face North and then take the number of faces in the timepiece (D), the number of people carved in the statue (E) and the number of Street lights (F) and add them together and take that many steps forward down our fireworks shortcut! _________

Now stop and use the numbers in the year the village was founded (A) to find your bearing to the Letterbox- use the first three numbers to make a 3 digit number, then the fourth and third number (in that order) to make a 2 digit number, add those numbers together and then subtract the first number of the year from that, and you have a bearing of ________ degrees. Walk approximately five steps at that bearing to find the letterbox, just past a LARGE FLAT rock, between a larger and smaller tree, under bark, rocks and surrounded by bricks.

Please be discreet and recover well, especially if you hunt for the box when the trees are not as full!

To return to your starting point, follow the shortcut North to the sidewalk and turn Left until you are back at the corner by the park. Head north and continue back toward Village Hall. You may want to return on the East side of Broad St. and check out the Gazebo and the business’ on that side of the street, or stop for an ice cream like my daughter always wants to, at Ferch’s! Or try one of the other many great places to eat on Broad Street. And don’t forget to say Hi to Norman Rockwell! Happy Birthday J!

Hope you enjoyed the stroll through Greendale, box updates appreciate- Thanks!
