Cranberry Lake Preserve is a 190-acre park operated by the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. Within the preserve are a variety of habitats including a four-acre lake, cliffs and scrubland, mixed hardwood forest, vernal pools, and a swamp. Visitors can learn about the area's past by following the History Trail to the remains of a 19th-century farmhouse and early 20th-century stone-mining operation. The Nature Center offers family-oriented nature programs most weekends and houses a variety of interactive, educational displays.

To the Letterbox: Enter the Preserve on Old Orchard Street and drive down the road to the parking lot opposite the Nature Lodge (not the parking spots near the entrance). Take the purple trail - to the right of the kiosk; a vernal pond is on the right. As you begin the walk, you'll come upon two wooden walkways that form a "T" - stay straight on the longer one and keep walking. There will be a stone wall on your right. The purple trail will then meet up with the red trail.

On the right, pass a board asking "What is a Watershed?" Soon after, the trail goes through a break in the stone wall. The trail then descends and goes to the left and then ascends. After a little while, there will be a series of planks (***Please note: it is reported that the planks do not appear until after you turn right for the purple/red trail).

Continue to follow the purple/red trail. You will walk along the lake on your right. At the end of the lake, take the red trail to the left, following the sign "To Quarry." Cross over a wooden bridge.

At the next fork, take the red trail to the right, following another sign "To Quarry." As the trail ascends, there will be rock outcroppings, first to your right, then on both sides of the trail. Continue following the signs that say, "To Quarry" until you come to the white trail.

Go to the first tree with a white blaze and take 30 steps; this will bring you to another tree with a white blaze. Behind it on the right are some large rocks. On the inside left side, a large and smaller rock form a triangle where they meet. The letterbox is in a "cave" at that place, covered with leaves and sticks.
