In 1832, Stephen F. Austin granted Reuben Hornsby 4500 acres on a horse-shoe shaped bend in the Colorado River just 9 miles east of present day Austin. That land has since been named Hornsby Bend, and in the early days of the Republic of Texas it stood at the most northern, remote tip of Austin's Colony. Reuben is not only the first Anglo settler in Travis county, but is also the great grandfather of Rogers Hornsby, the greatest right-handed baseball hitter of all time. Though Rogers was born in Winters, near San Angelo, he lived at the bend for several years as a child after the death of his father, and according to family legend he played baseball with older Hornsby children in the bottomland near the Colorado River. Rogers played for the St. Louis Cardinals for most of his career, then managed several teams before his death in 1963. He is buried in the Hornsby Bend Family Cemetery, near the Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory, where this box can be found.

Directions:
From Hwy 71 go north on FM 973 about 2.5 miles to Platt Ln and turn left. Bear left at jct then bear right and go through gate for Hornsby Bend Platt Ln entrance. Go to end at another gate and park off road in front of old abandoned house.

Clues:
Walk through gate on the River Trail (old road) for 60 steps then go right 8 steps to huge tree. LB is at front base under concrete rock and dirt.
