Tulsa Boxcar Eddie was a man on a mission. For seven years he had ridden the rails from North to South, coast to coast, to find the one place where he knew he was destined to reside – the Big Rock Candy Mountain. It had been a long trip, from Sugar Land Texas to Sweetwater Michigan, from Maple Valley Washington to Sugarloaf Key Florida, and while from time to time he grew tired he never stopped his quest.
Late nights scouring a gazette had led him here to eastern Chester County in Willistown Township, and while to be honest he was a little disappointed with what he found in Sugartown, he told himself “Another step closer.” The day was getting on and even though the summer sunset was late he wanted to get moving on. He had been walking down a country road for a while and as he squinted he saw he was at the intersection of Ridley Creek Lane and E. Strasburg Road. The road went on but to his north he saw a parking lot and a trail – maybe just the thing to save him some time!
Past the gate there was some sort of message board but Eddie wasn’t going to stop to read it – plus he’d have to learn to read and that would be a trial. He went straight ahead without hesitation – pleased to see the yellow diamonds on the trail reminding him of the glistening crystal peaks and whiskey streams of his future home. No matter what happened, he decided, he’d follow those diamonds.
As he went along he heard the creek nearby so he wasn’t surprised when the path led to a muddy bank. Twelve quick steps and he was across and on his way. The trail narrowed and he began to wonder if this was the right way, but a boardwalk reassured him that there was regular traffic and maintenance. After a brief jaunt through a field he crossed another, smaller stream in seven quick steps.
Coming out of the woods he saw his beloved yellow diamond again and turned right. 7 true paces further and he stopped – was there even a trail ahead? He tried to push forward but the summer grass had grown so high it blocked his way. Discouraged, he fell back.
What to do? This was a dead end for sure and the sun was almost set. He looked all around, and finally directly to the north he saw through the brambles a fallen tree next to a tall, strong one – a good place to spend the night if he was any judge. He couldn’t go directly to it but he curved around through the undergrowth until he could get to it. Around the back of the tree, sure enough, was a dry hollow. He cleared out the sticks from it and settled down for the night.
The next morning he woke. Another lead that didn’t pan out, sure, but he knew that somewhere down the road he’d find his dream. He got ready to work his way back to the road, but before he left he took out a piece of chalk and marked the sign he hoped would encourage the next traveller to wind up here -
