The Diverting Reservoir Trail is located on Railroad Avenue in the Village of Brewster. The trail runs parallel to the Diverting Reservoir, which is the smallest in New York City’s Croton System. The trail is flat and well-shaded, making it a great choice for new hikers and families with young children.

You’ll see a small pond surrounded by open fencing, which is where you can park. You will see a small information board which currently has no info, but once you enter the trail from here, which is wide at this point, pay attention to the trees on the right.

You will soon come to a large downed tree. Several yards ahead you will come to a second, smaller downed tree. Ahead further, you will see a third downed tree. None of these trees are too far from the trail and should be easily recognizable. The third one is slightly smaller than the second, and can also be distinguished by numerous vines hanging down in the immediate area.

As you approach you will notice there is a smaller tree under the fallen tree. There is a small crevice between the two trees, which is where you will find the box. A piece of bark may further conceal the box from view.

For further verification, from the main trail, you’ll notice a small trail on the left hand side, opposite the tree. This trail, as of now, is not well-worn but is still evident and goes down close to the river. If you see this trail you’ll know you have the right tree!

If you get to the section of the trail where it narrows down significantly, forcing you to walk single file, you’ve gone too far.

We hope you enjoy our letterbox, which was planted by the girls of Brownie Troop 1421 in Brewster. Please re-hide it carefully in the same spot for others to find. Thank you!
