Cape Lookout National Seashore is accessible by boat or ferry only. If you’re really looking for a rugged adventure, rent a cabin on the northern end of the island for an overnight stay. You will need a four wheel drive to make it down to the lighthouse. We suggest a day trip leaving from Beaufort or Harker’s Island on a tour such as the Island Express Ferry Service.

* The ferry will let you off at the Lighthouse Dock Pier.

* Continue to follow the wooded walk and take a right. You will see the Cape Lookout Lighthouse straight ahead. The opening scene of “The Butcher’s Wife” was filmed from the top of this.

* As the walk turns left, you will see the ticket office. The tower is open for climbing from mid-May to mid-September with tickets available on the island on a first-come, first-served basis. Note – closed on Sunday and Monday.

* Take a look to the right and enjoy the Shells of Sea and Sound display. Turn right as you head toward the Beach Keeper’s Museum. This little gem is free admission and open daily from 9-5. You will approach the lighthouse on your left. It is one of the most distinctive on the east coast since 1812.

* Stay straight at the crossing.

* Enter the museum on your right. You will be pleased to learn about the Legacy of Cape Lookout immediately to your right. As you enter the next room, you will find lots of info on Keepers of the Lighthouse.

* Exit through the back porch and walk down 4 steps for a great view of the sound. Can you see any ponies on Shackleford Banks?

*Turn around and walk 11 paces to face the back of the museum.

* You will find the box under the bottom step far left. Please be discreet as this is a busy place!
