Mudbug is just another name for the tasty little crustacean also known as crawfish, crayfish or crawdad. Though now eaten just about everywhere,
Louisiana has long been the state with greatest interest in catching, commercially raising, and eating crawfish, which is now the state crustacean. Some examples of ways to eat crawfish include: boiled, fried, crawfish pie, etouffee, jambalaya and bisque. The mudbug can be found in almost any fresh water bayou or lake, but this mudbug microbox can only be found in Sam Houston Jones SP. The park is located just north of the most productive birding region of Louisiana, and the three hiking trails winding along the Calcasieu River make strolling or serious hiking pleasurable.
Directions:
Sam Houston Jones SP is located twelve miles north of Lake Charles. From I10, exit on Hwy 171 and go north for 5 miles. Turn left on LA 378, then right on Spur 378 for 1 mile, then left again on Sutherland Road for .3 mile to entrance fee station. Pay fee, get map and drive to the Nature Trail head, bearing right and passing the Deer Pen on the left.
Clues:
Walk west on the Blue Trail for about 75 yards to the first Yellow Trail sign on your left. Continue on the Blue Trail for another 100 yards to the other end of the Yellow Trail loop. Turn left (southwest) at this second Yellow Trail sign and walk about 65 steps to another trail jct. with another Yellow Trail sign. Turn right (west) and walk 140 steps to another trail jct., but without a sign. Turn right and walk uphill about 30 steps to two benches with a view of the river. From between the two benches, walk north for 12 steps to a large pine tree. The microbox is buried at its base on the left (west) side under dirt, pine needles and sticks. Please re-cover well.
