This is a series of 5 letterboxes planted by Girl Scout Troop 43882 as part of their Take Action Project to teach families a healthy activity they can enjoy together that gets them outside and moving! So...Buzz outside and “bee” a letterboxer!

Please be safe, and ALWAYS take an adult with you when you letterbox.

*Wear gloves so you can reach into stumps and under leaves.

Follow the clues for the letterboxes in order, because each successive set of clues begins at the end point of the previous set of clues.

Letterbox #1

1. Start at the Nathan Chapman Memorial Trail sign at the end of the South Hill Park parking
lot at the corner of 86th Ave. E. and 144th St. E.
2. Walk over the wooden bridge.
3. Turn right at the end of the bridge.
4. Walk down to the pond.
5. Turn left on the dirt trail.
6. Walk 16 steps. (regular kid-sized walking steps, not toe-touching-heel.)
7. Stop at the fat tree with rough bark at the bottom and smooth bark at the top.
8. Look under some leaves at the tree’s roots to find Letterbox #1. Be sure to re-hide it so no one can see it.
9. If you step over a white pipe on the ground, you have gone too far.
10. Go back onto the paved trail.

Letterbox #2

1. Start at the wooden bridge.
2. Walk past a giant stump on your left behind a park bench.
3. Stay on the paved trail. You’ll be walking for awhile.
4. You will see a black chain link fence on your left. Keep walking.
5. Look for the fallen tree on your left with roots taller than your dad.
6. Look under the fern behind the small log to find Letterbox #2. Be sure to re-hide it so no one can see it from the trail.
7. If you reach the Y in the trail, you’ve gone too far. (Back up 30 kid-sized steps from the Y, and you’ll find the fallen tree.)

Letterbox #3

1. Start at the Y in the trail.
2. Veer left at the Y. (FYI: This north fork leads to Zeiger and the Heritage Park ball field.)
3. Walk to the second Y in the trail.
4. Veer left.
5. Follow the 1st bend in the trail.
6. Walk a long while until you see the 2 mile mark painted in white on the trail.
7. Walk 25 kid-sized steps.
8. Look for one stump on your left about as tall as a 4-year old kid.
9. You will know it’s the right one if you see another larger stump behind it and a rotting log lying on the ground next to it.
10. Look inside the stump to find Letterbox #3. Be sure to re-hide it so no one can see it from the trail.

*The last two letterboxes are for those looking for a bit more adventure off the paved trail and are further apart than the first 3.

Letterbox #4

1. Keep walking along the trail for a long time.
2. You will pass a small clearing on your left across from a housing development on your right.
3. Then pass a garbage can on your right.
4. Keep walking until you see a large wooden bridge.
5. About 10 steps before you reach the bridge, take the dirt trail on your left.
6. Walk down the trail until you can see the pond on your left.
7. Continue walking around the pond.
8. At the Y in the path, veer left.
9. You will step over a small log across the trail.
10. Keep left at the second Y.
11. Just before you reach a grassy opening on your left, look to your right for a large rock the size of a big sleeping dog.
12. Look behind the rock in the grass for Letterbox #4. Re-hide it well and return to the paved trail.

Letterbox #5

1. Begin at the large wooden bridge. It curves right, then left over a small meadow.
2. Keep walking until you reach a clearing (after the first bend in the path).
3. Walk under 7 (all) of the power lines.
4. Keep walking under a canopy of green and branches.
5. Notice a chainlink fence on your right.
6. Turn right on the path at the end of the fence.
7. Start to follow the path around the pond to your right.
8. Step over a small fallen tree.
9. Walk 4 kid-sized steps.
10. Look for two small trees that form a V.
11. Look in the grass at the base of the V for the final letterbox: Letterbox #5.
12. If you have to duck under dense branches, you have gone too far. Re-hide it well.

Congratulations! You have finished the Buzz Outside and “Bee” a Letterboxer! series. Hope you enjoyed getting outside and doing a healthy activity with your family!
