~8/11/07-This series has been cleaned up and returned to their original spots. I have also recarved the rain letterbox as it went missing. There is now only one log book and it is in the last box. Please bring ink with you as none is provided.~

~This series has been pulled for maintenance 4/6/07~

Directions:

From the intersection of routes 32 and 207 continue east on route 207 heading towards the Franklin Elementary School. Across the street from the school you will see the Giddings Recreation Park. Pull in here and park near the playground.

This series represents the first carvings by Fat Cat. I think that she did an excellent job. She's only eleven! She also came up with the story that goes along with the boxes.

Clues:

It was Christmas Eve and a mother brought her young daughter to the park to play. The mother had some last minute errands to do before the holidays began. She told her daughter that she could play on the swings while she went to do them. The girl continued to play on the swings while she waited for her mom. After a while she got bored, so she decided to explore.
She started walking towards the ball fields keeping the fence on her right. When she got to the corner of the farthest field she saw a path through the woods and decided to take it. She headed left on the yellow blaze path. She was feeling rather brave as the sun was shining and she was a Big Girl now.
She walked along on the yellow blaze path. After about 30 paces she saw what she thought was a clearing. She went off the path to the right towards it. When she crested the hill she realized that it was a SHARP DROP OFF! This was actually the top of Mount Muffins. She stopped short and realized that she was standing in the middle of a triangle of trees. There was a pine, oak and birch forming the points.
From inside this triangle she took a reading of 100 degrees and went 10 paces to a gnarly clump of trees with a cedar in its center. The sun was shining on her beautifully and she eyed a special glow coming from in this clump. She reached in and pulled out the SUN LETTERBOX. She stamped in discreetly and rehid it well.

She continued along on the yellow blaze path downhill, whistling and quite happy. She came upon a clearing with a horse ring. She went towards the ring. She then went towards a Cedar Grove, keeping the fence on her left, until she came up even with a flag pole on her left. She spied an opening in the woods off to her right and decided to take it.

She immediately came to a four-way intersection. To her left it looked like a dead end, to her right looked rather boring-like a bowling alley. But, straight ahead looked exciting. She proceeded straight. After walking a little ways and coming to a point where the path turns right she looked to her left and saw a /LION/ sleeping in a tree. She became very quiet and tiptoed past the sleeping king so as not to wake him. Thankfully he remained sleeping.

After walking about 58 paces she spied an enormous pine tree on her left. It looked just right for climbing. Still feeling adventurous, she decided to give it a try. After going up only a few feet she looked down on the south side of the tree to see a /TIGER/ basking in the sun on the ground. He hadn't heard her yet, so she scrambled back down and took off on the path in the same direction that she had been traveling.

The path narrowed a bit and got a little twisty, it even doubled back on itself. It was getting a little dark by now, and she had stopped skipping. She came to a tree with an arrow on it. Telling her which way NOT to go. A little ways further on the path she saw a barrell on the ground to her left. She also saw the neatest tree that was bending over. It looked like it was inviting her to climb up on it. She couldn't resist. As she reached up she came face to face with a hibernating /BEAR/.

It was the biggest one she had ever seen, actually it was the only one she had ever seen. She took off running down the path as fast as she could go-the bear was right behind her. She came to a four way and went left towards the sound of water. She was hoping the bear didn't like water and that it wouldn't cross the stream. When she got to the 'bridge' it was only a skinny little pole! She couldn't make it across that!

She turned with her back to the water and took a reading of 90 degrees and saw two birch trees on the left side of the path. She hid behind these and found the Rain Letterbox covered with bark, rocks and leaves. She stamped in and rehid the box well. She continued hiding behind the trees hoping the bear would not find her. The bear came charging up to the water and fell in because he couldn't stop. The current carried the bear away.

After a while she came out from behind the trees and headed back to the four way. This time she went left at the intersection. She stayed on this hoping it would lead her out of the woods. She was now very cold, tired, hungry and scared. It had been a long time since her mom had left. This path DID lead out of the woods, after a steep climb.

When she came out of the woods she saw the ball fields again. She went around the fields, keeping the fence on her left. She was headed back to the playground! She came to a small flagpole on her left next to the fence. She stopped to catch her breath and wipe the tears from her eyes. After clearing her eyes she saw off to her right at 180 degrees a large oak with four trunks coming from the same base.

It was an amazing tree and she wanted to examine it. She went about nine paces towards it and went around to its eastern side. There at the base, covered by lots of bark, was the Rainbow Letterbox. She stamped in and rehid the box as well as before, even better.

She left the tree and continued on to the playground. She had renewed hope that her mom would be there. And She Was! Just sitting there under the pavillion waiting for her. Oh, the stories the young girl could tell. She ran to her mom and hugged her.

The girl asked,"Mom, weren't you worried about what might have happened to me?"

And the mother replied,"Avaleengy, I didn't have to worry. I knew you could handle yourself, you're a big girl now.I think you also learned a Life Lesson today. That it takes both the sun and the rain to make a rainbow-good and bad make up life."

We hope you enjoyed the story and the hunting. You can also do our /Lions/,/Tigers/ and /Bears/ series at the same time. We've incorporated those boxes into this story.
