******This letterbox has been created and hidden by my 14 year old as part of a school project, including instructions on how to create and hide a letter box. His challenge for extra credit is to get 10 people to find it and stamp in it.

How to create a letterbox (By A. L. S.)

FIRST: you are going to want to choose a place to hide your letter box. You want it to be a public place where everyone can access it. It also needs to be hidden out of sight. Once you have chosen a place you will create a stamp design that corresponds with the place that you are hiding it.

NEXT: you need to collect your materials. You will need: A notebook, carving tools, an eraser (or two, one for practice), and ink pad, and a small sturdy plastic box. You will only be hiding two of these items so the box doesn’t have to be very big.

THEN: draw your design on the eraser. Start carving out your design, you may want to practice first. You do not want to go too deep at first. Once you think you are finished carving try it out with the ink pad and stamp it onto paper.

IF you are satisfied……. place the stamp, and your small notebook into the box. You may want to put them into a Ziploc back first for extra protection.

NOW: you are ready to go hide your box. Make sure it is well hidden from sight (example, under a bush, or some rocks).

NEXT: write down your clues on how to find your box. Once you are done you will want to post it on www.letterboxing.org so that other people can find it. (you will need to sign up for a free account first)

FINALLY: You will want to go check in on your box periodically. It is exciting to see how people from all over come to your letter box and leave there stamp there.

MY LETTER BOX:

Coming from I-90, headed South, turn down Reserve St. Turn right on South Ave. Follow signs to Ft. Missoula. Before you reach the Fort there is a small dirt road on the left leading to a grove of trees where the historic cemetery lies.

When you reach the Fort Missoula Cemetery, enter through the little gate and sit down on the bench. Then look at that beautiful view of Lolo Peak north east of you. Listen and look around you; do you hear the birds and see the beauty? Once you feel that inner peace look behind you to your right. You will see a sign. Read it and you shall gain more knowledge.

Once you are done reading look ahead, and you shall notice the pavement in the middle of the cemetery. Take about 85 steps down on the right side of the road. From the path go to your right. You will see a group of old tombstones. Just about all of these are infants that died in the chaos of war. If you go through the tombstones you will find Geo. W. Westbrook’s grave. If you take a close look at the tombstone you will see it is made of granite. Once your done look behind you and you will see a tree; in the base of the tree facing the fence, you will find The Home Of The Brave.
