When the boys and I lived in Oregon we used to take spontaneous trip to the coast with Auntie Rachel (who consequentially was also our letterboxing buddy). On our most recent trip to Oregon we took another one of those trips to the beach with her.
We started our day at the beach in Astoria. We climbed the Astoria column, saw the sea lions taking over the pier, then travel down 101 stopping wherever we felt like. We ended at our favorite stop Rockaway Beach, parking in the public access parking lot marked by the historic caboose. There we planted all four letterboxes.

These letterboxes are very easy to find, kid friendly, and can be found within a 15 minute walk from the parking lot.

BOX #1:
Start in the parking lot of the public beach access. Sit on the bench and enjoy the view of the ocean. To your left you will see a memorial for those who gave their lives fighting for our country. Directly behind the memorial there is a row of rocks. Past this first row, directly behind the memorial there are two rocks by themselves. Underneath the larger of the two you will find A Day at the Beach #1.

BOX #2:
Beyond these rocks there is a path to go down to the beach. Once on the beach continue in the direction of the twin rocks in the distance. You will want to stay along the sand for the grass and plants make the sand. On your left you will pass two large logs. The second one we thought looked like a crocodile. Reach your hand through his mouth and you will find a day at the beach #2.

BOX #3:
Continue toward the twin rocks until you reach a rope fence at the edge of the Silversand Motel. At the fence post a crevice is found. Along the crevice there is a mound of sand to the right covered in grass. Search through the grass and there you will find A Day at the Beach #3.

BOX #4:
When you are done enjoying a day of fun in the sun (or fun in the rain, after all it is the Oregon coast) then head back to the parking lot. It's now time for a treat. Once in the parking lot walk toward the creek until you reach the logjam. Standing facing the logjam look to your left. There is a giant rock and a short piece of driftwood. Wedged under the end of the driftwood that is touching the rock you will find the perfect way to end A Day at the Beach.
We hope that your Day At the Beach is as fun as ours was.
