Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

On May 22, 1716, Father Isidro FĂ©lix de Espinosa and his Spanish Franciscan expedition camped on the banks of Onion Creek near a towering baldcypress tree already over 200 years old. Three hundred years later, Old Baldy still stands sentry along the creek in what is now McKinney Falls State Park.

Directions:
From I35 go east on William Cannon Dr to McKinney Falls Pkwy, turn left to McKinney Falls State Park on the left and park at the Visitor Center. Walk east and down on the Rock Shelter Trail and find Old Baldy along the creek (note: this trail is currently closed so check status with park). For the letterbox, drive back out of the park and go left on McKinney Falls Pkwy 0.7 mile to traffic light. Turn left and drive by TX Parks Headquarters on the left to a stop sign. Turn right and continue bending right, then turn right into lot for Bldg D. Turn right in lot and park by concrete trail.

Clues:
Walk southwest on concrete path across road to stone building on the right. Continue on old gravel road, briefly joining Homestead Trail, then bear right on road to gate at park boundary. Go right uphill 32 steps, going past 2 cactus clumps, to cedar tree with branches touching the ground. Letterbox is under left branch covered by rocks. Please be discreet since runners use the road.
