Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

For many years this historic live oak served as a mustering point for men of the area who went forth to serve their country, and thus became known as the Muster Oak. Many parents, wives, and sweethearts have seen their loved ones depart from the shade of this tree to defend their rights in the War with Mexico, the War Between the States, the Spanish-American War, and the two World Wars. The tree is located across from the Fayette County Courthouse, but this letterbox is in nearby Old City Cemetery.

Directions:
From Hwy 71 go south on Hwy 77 about 1 mile to Colorado Street, turn right for 1 block to Washington Street and park nearby to see the Muster Oak on the northwest corner of Washington and Colorado Streets by a bank. For the letterbox, go northeast on Colorado St about 0.6 mile, then right on College St to Old City Cemetery on the left and park along street.

Clues:
Enter gate by historic markers and walk to white gazebo. Turn right and go 50 steps to stone bench by Freelan grave. Go left 7 steps to large bush to the left of Freelan grave with stone border running under it to a hidden cornerstone. LB is on back side of this cornerstone under a rock and leaves.
