*** Part of my Famous Trees Of TX Series ***
Terrain Difficulty: Easy (flat, 200 yards RT)
Status: alive

Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

Across from the Guadalupe County Courthouse stands a group of live oak trees, one of which was used in the administration of punishment by the lash. Runaway slaves, thieves, and wife-beaters were among those who received such punishment by being tied to an iron ring embedded in the tree, which can still be seen. The tree became known as the Whipping Oak and can be seen at the Guadalupe County Courthouse near Walnut Springs Park, where this letterbox can be found.

Directions:
From I10 go south on Hwy 123 (N Austin Street) about 2.1 miles to E Donegan Street and turn left by courthouse to see the Whipping Oak next to the gazebo on the right. For the letterbox, go west on E Donegan Street about 0.1 mile to S. Travis Street and turn right 1 block to Hwy 90 (Court Street). Go left about 100 yards and turn left into Walnut Springs Park lot.

Clues:
Walk to bridge and across creek then left to jct. Go straight to end of path with bench dedicated to Birdie. Go behind bench and up to large tree a few steps away for LB at back base under rocks. Please replace as described and be discreet.
