Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

Beside the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels stands a sturdy live oak where tradition says Mass was offered by the Abbe Em Domenech in 1849. It has come to be known as the Church Oak and has a concrete historical marker at its base. After seeing this tree you can find the letterbox on the nearby Dry Comal Trail.

Directions:
From I35 go northwest on Seguin Ave about 1.2 miles to Bridge Street and turn left for 0.1 mile, then right on Castell Ave to Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church on the left with the Church Oak in front. For the letterbox, continue northwest on Castell Ave to Zink Street and turn right 0.1 mile to Landa Street. Turn left and go about 2 miles to TX 337, turn left about 0.4 mile then left again into Little League park. Go left and park behind far baseball field near Dry Comal Trail head on the left.

Clues:
Walk on trail to 4-way jct and take the trail just right of center (355 degrees) with a bench on the right. Continue past a blank sign on right to a Y jct. Go left a few steps then left again at another Y jct. Go 35 steps to a bench on left at another Y jct. Walk behind far side of bench 7 steps to leaning tree. LB is within hollow at back base under a rock.
