Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

Under this giant live oak twelve early settlers of Goliad met on May 7, 1849 and organized the first Baptist church west of the Guadalupe River. One of these men was Reverend John Freeman Hillyer, who just 3 months earlier had established Hillyer Female College. The tree later became known as the Baptist Oak and can be found near the Angel Of Goliad Trail, where this box resides.

Directions:
From Hwy 59 go south on Chilton Ave 1 block and the Baptist Oak will be on the right. For the letterbox, continue south on Chilton Ave to Fannin St and turn left. Go to Market Street and turn right by the courthouse annex to the end and park by the Angel Of Goliad Trail.

Clues:
Walk down wood walkway to beginning of asphalt path, then go right at 255 degrees for 25 steps to a clump of trees. Go 2 more steps to another clump of trees where LB is within trunks under a rock and leaves.
