Happy Times in the Short Beach Preserve
Location: cul de sac at end of Midwood Road, Branford, CT 06405 (there is parking available in the cul de sac)
Boxes: 1
Clues:
Midwood Road is off Shore Drive (Rte 142) in Short Beach.
Follow road to its cul de sac end; trail starts at Branford Land Trust sign. You will be on the GREEN trail.
About 5 minutes into the walk the green path veers to the left (at a double green) while a wider unmarked trail continues straight. Stay on green path.
After another 5 minutes, you will see a double green on your right. Take that path to a double BLUE. Take the blue path for a while until you come to a double blue on a tree to your right. Follow single blue path ahead up a slight hill. At top of hill, landmark on your left is a clearing with evidence of a bonfire. On your right is a skinny twisted tree with a blue marker. Walk approx 15 steps to the right, towards the pond. You will find 2 fallen trees. Search for the box in the fallen tree to the right!
To return to the parking area, you can retrace the blue path until it joins the green; go left on green until you reach parking area. OR…proceed on blue up the hill and walk for a bit until the blue ends. You will be facing a large unmarked tree. You will see green trail going both left and right.
Go left on green and walk until you see a double blue on your left. Continue on green for 35 yards and you will see a lone single green on your right and several greens ahead of you. Take “multi-green” trail and follow until you are back at parking lot.
