Texans are fortunate to have such a rich and colorful historic heritage and trees which serve as witnesses to some of these historic events. Texas has also been blessed with trees famous for being the largest of their kind in America. "Famous Trees Of Texas" is a book written in 1970 by the Texas Forest Service that describes these trees, and this series will take you to some of them.

When Kyle was founded along the International & Great Northern Railroad in 1880, this giant live oak was the site of a public auction of town lots. The railway was given 200 acres of land by Fergus Kyle, for whom the community was named, and the family of David E. Moore. Free rides were provided to the townsite on auction day, Oct. 14, 1880, and the tree became known as the Kyle Auction Oak. In 1881, the railroad gave 4 acres around the tree for a school, Kyle Seminary, which burned in 1889.

Directions:
From I35 go west on Center Street about 0.4 mile to Sledge Street and turn left. Go 1 block to the Kyle Auction Oak on the right with Historic marker nearby. For letterbox, continue on Sledge Street to Opal Ln and turn right. Go 0.4 mile to Old Stagecoach Rd, turn left and go 1.2 miles to Kyle Cemetery on the left. Go to Y jct with Historical marker in middle, go right and to where road bends left and park by Kyle tombstone on left.

Clues:
Walk right into the Pioneer Cemetery just left of the gate and continue toward back to stone marker for Richard Parker. Go left at 200 degrees for 25 steps to large multi-trunk cedar tree. Letterbox is within trunks at back about 1 foot high under rocks.
