There was an elite group of seven Koreshan women that were considered to be in a ruling class. They were often referred to as the “Seven Sisters”. Mrs. Rose Marie Welton
Gilbert was one of those high revered ladies. She also served as Estero's longest serving postmaster. Rose held the post from 1914 until 1941. The post office Rose originally worked in was located in the old Koreshan store. In 1924 the post office was relocated to a new store about 50' south of the previous location. That building still stands at the edge of the Koreshan property, close to the Estero River and US 41. The original store/post office was destroyed by fire in 1938.

Rose Gilbert may not be famous by today's standards but she still deserved a tribute. She was a strong woman in an era where women were not always treated fairly. I decided to place Rose back at the original post office where her long career began. Like any independent woman, she is technically "off limits" so be wary and VERY careful so as not to destroy any part of this irreplaceable historic structure. Stand at the top of the steps and look down to the Estero River. Pay no attention to the sound of the traffic. Imagine walking into the old post office to mail your letter. Rose is waiting for you at the bottom of the stairs under a pedestal. She welcomes you to this beautiful park.

Bring a pen/pencil as this is a small letterbox. If Rose should need attention, please let me know.
