101’4” Stone Needle
Can you find the 101’4” stone needle standing in Fort Recovery?
The park is located at the corner of OH-49 and OH-119.

This century old obelisk is the burial site and memorial to those slain in the two battles fought in Fort Recovery; a defeat led by General Arthur St. Clair followed by a victory under the leadership of General Anthony Wayne over an army of a confederation of Native American tribes. Building of the monument in Fort Recovery was approved by Congress after a bill was signed by President William Howard Taft in 1908.
The Fort Recovery Monument letterbox is hidden in this park. To begin the search, enter the park at the south facing archway (Their Deeds Are Immortal) near the Ohio Byway sign posted on St. Rte. 119. Looking to the left, you’ll notice two cannons on display in the grass. Find the cannon with this stamped on the surface…R.P.P. No 162 3495 LBS.
From this artillery piece, advance to the monument path and circle counterclockwise around. Read the engraved names on each medallion and stop at the one that reminds you of “SMALL RABBIT”. Put your backside to this “SMALL RABBIT” medallion and then proceed in a straight path until you find the “bear face” in the sidewalk. Now walk diagonally approximately 13 paces going across and beyond the EAST JORDAN IRON WORKS grate. Search here, high and low, to find the Fort Recovery Monument letterbox.
Happy hunting!
