Hobo Penguin Letterbox
This is the centennial year of the Northwestern Pacific Railway! This letterbox is designed to celebrate that as well as offer a glimpse of some old train cars that are being restored in Petaluma.
The box is located outside a cyclone fence that surrounds the NWP Restoration Yard located at East Washington Street and Copeland. From Hwy 101, take East Washington and head west toward the historical downtown area. The Restoration Yard will be on your right, across the street from the Transit area and the River Plaza.
The box can be located on the east side of the Yard in a lone bush along the cyclone fence.
Why Hobo Penguin? When the old baggage car was turned into a room for a family to live in, it was eventually abandoned. Left behind was a stuffed penguin. When the truck driver brought the abandoned baggage car to the Restoration Yard, he taped Hobo Penguin on the front of the car. It has remained with the baggage car ever since, as its "official" mascot.
