The Cumberland Land Trust Letterbox Series
Box #1 of 4: Veronica Geddes Bowen Preserve

Easy ten minute walk to letterbox; 40+minutes round trip to continue hiking entire trail

Clues:

1. Begin on the trail-head at Angell Road.

2. Walk straight on the path and don’t take any turns. You will come to a stream bed. There may be stump steps to help you get across if there is water in the stream.

3. Continue straight on the path. Duck under a tree and know you are on the right track.

4. Walk through a break in a stone wall.

5. After about 65 paces from the stone wall, begin to look around at the trees near the edge of the path.

6. When you see a triangle of trees, two skinny ones on the left and one large one on the right, you have reached your destination. A tree on the left will have a knot near eye level.

7. Search low around the exposed roots of this tree.

8. After you find the letterbox, please hide the box back where it was found so that others can enjoy this hunt as well.

*You may not see the ‘star’ of this stamp on the hike but be sure to look for it near the pond on Angell Road.

*Look for sassafras along the route if you come during growing season. This plant has three distinct leaf shapes. Its root was used in the traditional flavoring of root beer and is sometimes used in tea.
