Growing up in Temecula, I had always heard that the last legal execution by hanging in the state of California happened to a local blacksmith in 1937. Visits to the spooky old jail in Old Town was all the proof I needed. Turns out, that grisly claim to fame is entirely false. Oh well. To commemorate this bit of completely inaccurate local lore, a stamp has been hidden near the old jail.
Walk down the corridor with shops on either side, and take a left to walk around the little building. In the back you'll find the old Temecula jail. Say hi to the fellas. Walk back around to the front of the jail, passing the corridor with the shops on your right and head to the parking lot. From the red bricks at your feet, walk 40 paces due south to the opposite corner of the lot. Look between the fence and the beige cargo container. You'll find the box down low, stuck to the container.
