The Warriors is a popular series of books by author Erin Hunter. In the series, wild cats live in four clans - ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan and ShadowClan. The SkyClan and StarClan are also introduced later in the series. Each of the clans has their own emblem, or symbol. You'll be searching for the letterboxes that represent these six clans.
You'll be searching for letterboxes at Walton Woods park. Walton Woods is adjacent to the Audubon Public Library and Amherst Police Station, just off of Audubon Parkway in Amherst. The trails, some paved, some not, wind through woods and around Lake Audubon and Walton Pond. The terrain is primarily flat. This can be a very well-used area, so please take care finding and re-hiding the letterboxes.
Enter Walton Woods from the parking area near the woods in the back, past the library.
CLUES:
Letterbox #1 - River Clan
You will come upon the lake, 3 rocks, and a bench. Walk straight off the paved pathway and past the rocks, as though you're going to walk right into the lake (don't, of course!) Turn left and walk along the lake. On your left side, you'll see a tree with 4 trunks. The first letterbox you seek is hidden among its branches. (Warning: the tree to the left of the hiding spot seems to have a beehive in it. Definitely make sure to approach the 4-trunked tree from the right-hand side).
Letterbox #2 - WindClan
Get back on the paved path, keeping the lake on your left. You'll pass 4 park benches - the first 2 on yoru left, the 3rd on your right and the last one will be on your left again) Stop at this 4th bench. Using your right arm, point at the Senior Center. You'll also be pointing at a tree with many trunks. Look there for the Wind Clan letterbox.
Letterbox #3 - ThunderClan
Continue along the path, with the lake on your left. When given a choice, turn right. On your left side you'll see a tree that is carved with "Lori N Andy". Behind it is a fallen log that looks like an alligator. Look in the alligator's mouth for the ThunderClan letterbox.
Letterbox #4 - SkyClan
Continue down the path. You know you're getting close when you see a tree on the left-hand side that is carved with "AM + KH". Go a little further and you'll see a tree with "WEB12" carved into it. Behind this tree you'll see an old tree stump on the ground. Look into its hollow for the SkyClan letterbox. If you get the PVC pipe under the path, you've gone too far.
Letterbox #5 - ShadowClan
Continue on the paved path until you see the "Nature Trail" sign. You'll be turning left onto the Nature Trail, which is not paved. You'll see lots of ferns on your right. Keep your eyes open for a tree with "WM" carved on it (this will be on the right-hand side of the path). Stop at this tree and look to your left. You'll see a tree with what looks like the perfect hole for a letterbox. Go closer to this tree & you'll see that hole is definitely too shallow. However, if you head to the left of this tree, you'll see another tree that is perfect for hiding the ShadowClan letterbox.
Letterbox #6 - StarClan
Get back on the Nature Trail and continue walking. On your right-hand side, you'll see a tall tree stump with a split down the middle of it. This means you're going the right way & haven't gone too far. Continue walking a bit. When you see a small tree on your left-hand side that looks like it could get up and run away, you've gone just a big too far. Take a few steps back and continue looking on the left-hand side of the path. You're looking for a tree on that has the perfect hollow for hiding a letterbox. You won't be able to tell this from the path...you'll have to leave the path and look around a bit to find it. Don't give up! StarClan is waiting for you.
