This letterbox is about 1 hr, but very worthwhile. You'll need a state park sticker. There are lots of extra optional things we recommend to do here as well if you have the time. If the weather is warm, definitely bring a swimsuit.

Batman was relaxing on his favorite tree seat over the water at Cathedral Point on North Trout Lake when he suddenly heard Poison Ivy & her murderous plant monsters up to no good. (This is a beautiful area to visit with a picnic lunch, but do look for the marked area where real poison ivy sometimes grows. If you don't have extra time, you can skip to the next section, but this area was also a family tradition that we had to share and well worth the stop. The trees at the top of the stairs are enormous!) Batman quickly put a stop to them and transported his captives south on Hwy. M until he reached Hwn N where he turned left or East.

His Batmobile raced on Hwn N until he saw a sign about “Crystal-Muskie Campground” where he turned left. He knew Commissioner Gordon would be waiting for him a little way down the road at the ranger station to take Poison Ivy to Arkham Asylum. “Thanks again, Batman!.” Said Commissioner Gordon. “We couldn’t have done it without you. Hey, while you’re here, take a look around and make sure to pick up a Wisconsin Explorer Book for Robin.”

Just then, some camper crashed in through the ranger station door out of breath panting, “HELP! There’s a crocodile or something in Crystal Lake eating everyone’s canoes!”

“Sounds Like Killer Croc,” said Commissioner Gordon to Batman, but he was already gone. Batman hopped into the Batmobile that was parked at the ranger station and cruised down the road to the lake. He parked at the first public beach, and ran down to the water’s edge. Something large erupted from the water holding half a canoe in one hand and a fish in the other.

Killer Croc growls, “Batman! You found me.” He throws the canoe at Batman, but he dodges it. Killer Croc dives back into the water and swims toward the boat landing on the south side of the lake. (When you’re looking across the lake, start walking right. Depending on how high the water is you might need to do some wading, but you'll be glad you did as the water is crystal clear) Batman pursues Croc as he runs along the shore to the boat landing.

Croc reaches the boat landing first and runs up the ramp, but Batman is close behind. At the first intersection Croc turns left and passes lots of campsites on both sides of the road. When he reached the flush bathrooms on his right he can’t go any farther because Commissioner Gordon’s men have already blocked off the intersection.

Still thinking he could escape Crock climbs the solar panel. Batman quickly throws an electrified Bata-rang that sticks into the solar panel and shocks Croc. He falls to the ground and is restrained by the police. Before Commissioner Gordon can thank the Dark Knight for his help again, he’s once again vanished, but this time he’s headed back to the Bat Cave.

Batman turns left at this still blocked off intersection, heading up a hill toward the lake. He sees a red sign that says “No Pets. No Bikes” and turns left. He walks down the path to the water again and continues walking right (or the same direction as before going around the lake) You’ll be walking at the lake for a little while now. (Optional: it’s a great time to go wading or swimming here if you’re not already barefoot in the water.) Keep an eye out for frogs, eagles and loons.

When Batman passed the camping beach and reached the next public beach (not the one where his Batmobile was still parked) he knew he was almost there. He kept walking until he was almost at the end of this beach. Then he turned right/North and walked across the sand, up the beach hill, past picnic tables, through pines and across a road. On his left (to the west) was a large wooden building, the Nature Center; he walked toward it. He followed the cement-paved path with animal footprints and leaf prints on it past the nature center until he reached the pavilion picnic area in the back. Finally he looks north and then above him to see a box with his bat symbol on it. Stand to the right of this wooden pole and walk 12 paces straight into the woods, past a large tree until you reach three trees growing together. In the middle of these three trees you’ll find the letterbox. Make sure the coast is clear as lots of people are in the area on nice days. Also be quiet and careful to not disturb the bat box in anyway disrupting any bats that may be in it.

After re-hiding well, check out the nature center if you have time. It’s well worth it. Then to return to where the batmobile is parked you can either head back to the lake and continue walking around the beach or stay on the road that heads back to the first public beach parking lot. Option two will lead you past the opening to a bike path that says “To Firefly or Boulder Junction.” This stretch is a favorite of ours with a breath-taking view of a birch tree forest. We’ve been coming to Crystal Lake for years. We hope you’ve enjoyed finding the letterbox and seeing why this place has been so special to us for so long.
