Park in the lot on the south end of the pond.

Distance: ~1 mile
Terrain: Narrow dirt & rock trail alongside a creek

We have been hikers almost all of our lives and our hikes have been enhanced ever since we started letterboxing back in 2003. We’ve had a lot of fun finding boxes in all 50 states and are also trying to plant one in every state (we now only have Hawaii left). Unfortunately the weather was threatening when we passed through Rhode Island this summer, so we only had time to do a short hike to plant our box.

Start your hike by heading southeast to cross the bridge over the dam spillway and fish ladder. Take the first trail on the right and pass through a gate with a white blaze. Travel along, admiring the stream on your right and crossing several small feeder streams (this trail could be a bit muddy if there has been rain or snow recently). After ~1/2 mile stop at the “root stairs” near a small multi-trunk birch(?) tree. The letterbox is behind the tree, under a rock.

Please replace it so it is not visible from the trail in either direction and secure it with a rock so it doesn’t slide down. Retrace your steps to return to your vehicle. If you have more time and the weather is good, you may want to do the loop hike around the pond.

We live quite far from here, so we would greatly appreciate an email message to let us know how the box is doing. Thanks and Happy Hiking!

Hike length: 1 mile
