This letterbox has been approved and permitted by NYS Parks. Thanks to Roland Beck, park manager for approval.

Many years ago when the lands of Letchworth State Park were walked upon by no human feet, the valley was cared for by the little people known as the Jungies. They eventually shared their land with the Real People who learned to care for the land as the Jungies taught them. When the white man settled in the valley they brought with them much turmoil as they killed many trees, plants and animals and chased the Real People out of the valley. After many attempts by the Jungies to chase the white man from the valley, they felt defeated and took the valley’s most valuable treasures and locked them in a box and hid them in the woods so that they wouldn’t fall into the hands of the destructive ones.
Just as the Jungies were about to leave the valley, W.P. Letchworth arrived and began to restore the valley to the beauty it originally held. The Jungies, seeing much good in Letchworth, assisted him in this quest. Although the Jungies were very fond of Letchworth and those that followed him, they still kept their box of treasures hidden in the woods for only those who have a kind heart to find. They placed sentinels to guard the area around the box to keep it from falling into the wrong hands.

Do you have a kind heart? If so, you may try to find the box of treasures…

Begin your quest where VISITORS gather to learn about the valley. The building of stone is the CENTER of business. Across the hardened ground where the visitors park their transportation there is an entrance into the woods where the treasure was hidden. Enter the woods here and ahead you will see one of the sentinels who guard the path to the treasure.

The sentinels are aligned along the path, proud to stand tall and steady, guarding the way. These sentinels carry much power through the woods. They wear their numbered golden badges proudly on their chests. Sentinel #78 will greet you with silence and will allow you to pass if your heart is kind enough.

As you walk past each of these towering sentinels, be aware of their importance for if your heart sways, they may stop you. If you make it to sentinel #70, you must have much kindness in your heart and you may take a brief rest at this point. This guardian of the treasure has stood so dedicated for so long that the Jungies gave him a companion to keep him company and to help him guard the path to the treasure.

This small red minion just beyond sentinel #70 is standing watch over the path to your destination.

Take the new trail which the red minion guards. Beware of the brown snakes that wind through the trees as they may try to break your heart from the kindness it holds. The snakes are thick in body near the ground and get smaller as they reach to the sky.

As you walk a short distance below and past the snakes, you will notice a guardian tree to your right which has stood in these woods for many years. He has been attacked by many with evil hearts, leaving holes in his sides. The snakes help to hold him steady as he is the keeper of the treasure. If your heart is not filled with enough kindness for the valley, turn around and leave the woods. If it is, you may search below the guardian tree for the treasure the Jungies have left you.
