The nacilep is a beautiful bird which can be found year round in the Trempealeau Wildlife Refuge but you are most likely to spot them on the water during the spring and fall migration seasons.
This box can be found by foot, bike or motor vehicle. We planted the box via bicycle so the clues are tilted that way, but the box can be approached any way you choose. The Trempealeau Wildlife Refuge is teeming with life so the more time you have wander the site the more you will are likely to see. It took us about ½ hour to ride to, plant and ride back to the car at a very leisurely pace.
Go to the main entrance of the Trempealeau Wildlife Refuge which is on Prairie Road Drive. There are brown signs indicating the way off of Highway 35 to the North of Trempealeau or you can also access Prairie Road Drive out of Perrot State Park in Trempealeau.
Driving into the refuge, cross the bridge over the Trempealeau River, go through the gate (which is open until dark) and then enter the first parking lot on the right of the road which has about 5 parking spots and a large display board about Prairie’s Edge Tour Loop and Great River State Trail. There is also a sign indicating the beginning of the Prairies’ Edge Tour Loop and Great River State Trail. There is a bike path, and a driving path. Just a bit down the path there is also a separate hiking path that goes off into the prairie. For this box, stay on the bike trail (which is also a nice walk). The bike trail is the left of the driving path.
Now, begin the adventure down the Prairie Trail. You will pass 1, then 2, then 3 different types of prairie flowers. There are signs for the different flowers (you will actually see more than three kinds of flowers) so follow the signs. The sign for the third flower is at the bottom of a hill and just after that sign the bike path turns right and crosses the driving path. There is a stop sign on the bike trail just before this crossing. If you are driving in, you will see the bike path cross the road and you will want to stop here to find your prize.
Just after the crossing, you will see 1, then 2, then 3 multi-trunked oaks on the left side of the trail. Check out the middle (2nd) tree clump and amongst the trunks under some stones you will find the nacilep. Please stamp up, replace the stones, and enjoy the Refuge.
