Lamar Homestead Park is dedicated to the memory of Mirabeau B. Lamar, one of the earliest citizens in Fort Bend County. Lamar served as the second President of the Republic of Texas and is known as the ‘Father of Texas Education’ for his contribution to the public school system. The park land is known to be the location of Lamar’s homestead in the final years of his life and is designated by the State of Texas as an archeological reserve. It is also located near the site of Fort Bend (or Fort Settlement), built in 1821 by original members of the Old 300, and the name given to the county when it was created in 1837.

Directions:
From Hwy 90 go south on S 2nd Street for 0.2 mile then left on Fort Street to Front Street. Go right for 0.4 mile then left on Eugene Hermann Circle to parking lot on left across from Fort Bend County Justice Center.

Clues:
Walk east across steps going over levee to sign for Lamar Homestead Park. Go right on gravel loop, reading historical signs as you go, to metal bench at far south end near sign about the second Mrs. Lamar. Facing left side of bench, walk behind it 10 steps to medium tree, then 5 more steps to tree with barbed-wire fence behind it. Microbox is hanging on wire behind tree about 1 foot high. Leave box attached to wire and just remove contents by pushing down and turning lid of pill container. When done, replace lid tightly and continue around path to starting point, enjoying history as you go.
