HISTORY:

Dillon Dam was built on the Licking River as part of the Muskingum Valley Flood Control Program of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is located north of the famous Y-bridge and the city of Zanesville and was completed in 1961. It was constructed in part in response to the massive flooding of Zanesville in 1913. The dam backs up the river into a permanent reservoir covering about 1325 acres and extending 10 miles upstream. For storing flood water the pool could be enlarged to 10,285 acres and nearly three times larger than normal.

Dillon Dam construction faced several challenges. The reservoir that would form as a result of the dam would completely submerge Claylick, Nashport, Irville and required that most of the town of Toboso be torn down. Opposition to the project was fierce for that reason, but the benefits of the dam served a wide constituency and construction was not prevented. Construction of Dillon Dam began in June 1946, but a shortage of materials due to the outbreak of the Korean War stopped construction. Construction started up again in 1958 and it was completed in June, 1961. The dam protects the Muskingum Valley, including the cities of Zanesville, McConnelsville, and Marietta.

The Dillon Dam is a rolled, earth-filled structure 118-feet high and 1400 feet long. Originally estimated at under $7 million, the final cost of the structure was reckoned at $35 million. Dillon Lake and surrounding area is open to the public for picnicking and water recreation, with the entire area named in honor of the noted pioneer industrialist, Moses Dillon. Moses Dillon is also known for his contribution towards the construction of the first Y-Bridge in Zanesville. This first bridge opened in 1814 and collapsed into the river in 1818. Look for letterboxes to come referencing the Y-bridge and how it affected the area! Coming this summer!

CLUE:
Enter Dillon Dam @ Dillon Dam Rd. just north of Zanesville on SR146. This entrance is not well marked, but is near The Storage Center mini storage. Follow Dillon Dam Rd. around and continue on the long straight stretch across the dam towards the dam tower. Park and stand at the top of the steps leading to the base of the steps. You will find "Dillon Dam" under the top landing on the left side.

*Notice the water level gauge running up the side of the tower. On Jan. 16, 2005, the reservoir hit a record high at 788.23 ft and was at 93.2% capacity! Things looked a little different that day! Look for letterboxes to come referencing this 2005 flood and how it affected the area! Coming this summer!
