Like trains? You’ve hit the jackpot! The Northwestern Pacific Railroad Historical Society is a little known resource for all things having to do with the NWP in the Redwood Empire.

Every Thursday and one Saturday a month, volunteers log and organize thousands of items having to do with the NWP trains. This is a wonderful resource for researchers and history buffs!

“The Northwestern Pacific Railroad Historical Society (NWPRRHS) was founded thirty years ago. It seeks to preserve the rich and diverse heritage of Redwood Empire railroading and to keep abreast of the patterns of change as they evolve. The Society attempts to accomplish this mission through acquisition of maps, photographs, drawings, statistical data, artifacts and other memorabilia. Also, by publishing results of our historical research and studies and by recording oral histories from participants who contributed to a significant aspect of our regional heritage. In addition, NWP-related historical displays, largely prepared from our archival collections, are exhibited and maintained at the Santa Rosa Depot and the Cloverdale Depot.”

Directions:

The archives are only open every Thursday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (excluding holidays) and the 1st Saturday of the month, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

From Hwy 101, take the northernmost exit (“Penngrove”) in Petaluma. Head east and almost immediately, turn right at the 1st set of lights onto North McDowell.

Coming from this direction, the Kohl’s shopping center is on your right. Since there is a road divider, you’ll need to do a u-turn back around in order to get the other side of the street.

1364 North McDowell in Petaluma, California. This location is directly across from the Kohl's shopping center.

When you enter the archive library, ask, “Am I somewhere in particular?” Your reward is in the 2nd drawer on the right of the oak desk. (Note: Just in case the person you ask looks puzzled, ask for Steve).
