The first of the Anderson Valley apple farms is approximately 2 and 1/2 miles west of Philo on Hwy. 128. The Gowan family have been selling their wares here since the 30's and currently feature 65 varieties of apples as well as lots of other fruits and vegetables. My favorite purchase here is the frozen cider which is superb. In the fall, Gowans features a lovely child-friendly pumpkin patch on the north side of the Navarro River which can be reached by riding in the farm wagon pulled by the tractor.
The second apple farm is The Apple Farm on Philo-Greenwood Rd. just a few turns in the road west of Gowans. The Apple Farm doesn't have quite the variety of Gowans, but here all the apples are organically grown. There is a sign announcing the Apple Farm, but it's also easily spotted as it's also the turn to Hendy Woods State Park. Just before the bridge over the Navarro River on the left is the turn into The Apple Farm.
Here at the self serve farm stand are apples in season, but at all times of the year, I get to purchase my favorites, fig-walnut chutney and apricot jam.
The Apple Farm features unique sleeping cottages as well as week-end cooking classes.
To find the apple letterbox, cross the Philo-Greenwood Rd. to the other side of the bridge. Under the bridge at the first vertical beam, look on the top of the horizontal beam behind a rock in the first opening.
Hide well and check out the river and/or the redwoods at Hendy Woods.
