The Spikedace is a small endangered fish native to the Verde River.
This box is along the Verde River near Riverfront Park. From I-17, take exit 287 and drive northwest on State Highway 260 to Cottonwood. Turn left on Main Street and after it makes a major turn to the west, go to N. 10th Street and turn right. Go past the Riverfront Park, make the major left turn, and at the sign “Now entering Dead Horse Ranch State Park” turn into a dirt parking area on the left side of the road.
Walk across the street and enter the park through the opening in the fence. At the concrete round picnic table bear left (west) and walk down this well established trail leaving the “disc golf area”. Continue straight on this trail heading towards the Verde River Bridge. As you approach the bridge the trail curves to the right. Just before going under the bridge look for the “Jail Trail sign”. From this sign look right to a 5 ft. tall stump. The box is on the east side of the stump, under a prone log, covered with a flat rock and some plant debris. Be alert for snakes.
Please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag), and put all of it INSIDE the box. Please rehide the box well under the rock and plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.
I will not be able to check on the box very often; so, please let me know if you find it or if the box needs attention or is missing:
